In version 4.5 the URLs are handled differently from previous versions. Changes are made to follow the guidelines of search engines such as Google and Yahoo, facilitate navigation, and also increase readability. The URL:s now reflect the hierarchical position of the page in the website. Further, the URL has been cleaned up and do not contain the “web” folder, the “.aspx” suffix, nor the sequential number that was used to identify products and product groups published on a website. The page alias that you could specify for a page in previous versions has been abandoned. All URL:s, for pages, products and product groups are unique in a website.
Page URLs
In previous versions, the URL of the start page included the page alias http://www.mysite.com/web/Home.aspx. From version 4.5, the URL of the start page is the domain name only – http://www.mysite.com. URLs to pages further down in the page structure reflects the hierarchical position of the page, for example http://www.mysite.com/architecture/frank-lloyd-wright.
Product URLs
When publishing a product or product group with the new “Product catalog page”, the first part of the URL is actually the URL of the page. For example, if you create a new product catalog page called “New sofas” and point out the product group “Sofas” to be listed, the URL to that page would be “New sofas”. The hierarchical structure of an assortment is reflected by the URL – http://www.mysite.com/products/furniture/chairs/lamino. In this example the part “products” is the URL of a product catalog page.
URL name – new field on pages and products
To manage the URLs of pages and products, there is a new field called “URL name”. Since each URL path has to be unique, no page or product siblings can have the same URL name. Furthermore, the value of the field is language dependent for products and product groups.
URL history
Whenever a page is renamed, moved or copied, the former URL is stored. If a request is done to the former URL, the request is redirected to the new URL via a 301 redirect. This means that the former URLs still can be accessed by site visitors. This also means that search engines still can follow the former URLs and be informed of the fact that the URL has changed. Thus, the URL will keep its search engine ranking even though the URL is changed.
By default, this setting is configured to clean up the history after 90 days or 50000 URL:s being stored. If you prefer, you can change the settings for "Count" and "Days" in the Web.Config as follows:

Upgrade from previous versions
When upgrading from previous versions of Litium Studio all URLs are automatically transformed to follow the new URL framework. The URLs used in the previous version are stored and handled as described in “URL history” above, meaning that all old URLs will work and keep their search engine ranking.
